Gujarat: 60 farmers detained, 10 injured as police fire tear gas shells to control crowd

Nearly 60 farmers were detained and around 10 farmers injured on Sunday when police fired tear gas shells to control the crowd.
The farmers were protesting against land acquisition efforts by Gujarat government for coal mining. Around ten thousand people had gathered and the state administration had deployed 700 police personnel to meet any eventuality as some farmers had threatened to carry out self-immolation.
"Police had to charge batons and use tear gas shells to control the crowd," said Superintendent of Police Pravin Mal. The crowd included elderly people, women, and children too. The incident occurred at Baandi village of Ghogha in Bhavnagar district.
