It is an irony of sorts. The Gujarat Technological University (GTU) is struggling to get donors to encourage engineering and pharmacy toppers and give gold medals as it holds its first ever convocation on January 19. Incidentally, after the Gujarat University (GU) affiliated engineering, pharmacy and other professional courses colleges were shifted under the GTU, the former has a surplus of around 39 gold medals.

The surplus medals at GU were meant for toppers in engineering, pharmacy and professional courses colleges that were transferred to GTU two years ago. The donors at the GU for these 39 gold medals had sponsored them to encourage engineering, pharmacy and other professional course toppers.

Even as the GTU has managed to get only 3 donors to sponsor gold medals, the GU vice-chancellor Dr Parimal Trivedi is not even thinking of transferring the gold medals to the GTU to help the new varsity and encourage students.

The GU has 26 gold medals for Bachelor of Engineering, 6 for Bachelor of Pharmacy, 5 for MBA and 2 gold medals for MCA in surplus. When asked about this, Dr Trivedi said that they have no plans to transfer the surplus gold medals to the GTU. "For doing so, we have to seek donors' permission. We will seek their permission and transfer the gold medals to other disciplines at the GU," he said.
Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) spokesperson and syndicate member at GU Manish Doshi said that not finding donors at GTU is a shameful matter for the education sector in Gujarat. Doshi said that the Gujarat government that has been spending crores to celebrate different 'utsavs' is not coming forward to sponsor gold medal to boost the students' spirit.
"The gold medals should be given from the funds of central admission committee and GTU admission fee worth Rs 69 lakh. GTU has more than 18 cr as examination fee for last three years and enrolment income of worth Rs 58 cr," he said.
