'Govt should not spend Rs 4,200 crore in organising Kumbh Mela,' says Congress leader Udit Raj

Days after Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that government money could not be used to teach Muslim religious book Quran in Madrassas, Congress leader Udit Raj on Thursday said that government should not spend Rs 4,200 crore in organising Kumbh Mela. The former Lok Sabha MP said that the government should not fund any religious teachings and rituals as the state doesn’t have its own religion.

“No religious teachings and rituals to be funded by the Govt. The state doesn't have its own religion. UP govt spent 4200 crore in organising the Kumbh Mela in Allahabad and that too was wrong,” remarked Udit Raj.

Sarma had on Tuesday (October 13) said that the state government will stop the teaching of Quran at the cost of government exchequer from November.  He had also that if the government is bearing the cost of teaching the Quran in madrassas, then it should also pay for the teaching of Bible and Bhagavad Gita.

BJP has slammed Udit Raj for his statement. "Some people don't have ideas & will for development. When crores of people attend an event, govt has to develop infrastructure & provide facilities. Such events provide opportunities to develop infrastructure," said Union Minister Anurag Thakur.

"Kumbh is a global affair now, it's just not restricted to Uttar Pradesh govt. One should not comment on such an event, which is attended by the millions across the world," Uttar Pradesh Minister Brijesh Pathak added.
