Asthana, an IPS officer of the Gujarat cadre from the 1984 batch, is currently serving as Additional Director in the CBI. He will hold the second highest position in the agency after the CBI Director.

This sets aside the speculation about Asthana's candidature being put on hold by a selection committee headed by the Central Vigilance Commissioner.

Another top cop to be promoted is Gurbachan Singh, serving as Additional Director in the Intelligence Bureau. He has been appointed Special Director. Singh is an IPS officer belonging to Odisha cadre from the 1984 batch.

Sudeep Lakhtakia and Deepak Mishra from the 1984 batch working as additional DGs in the Central Reserve Police Force have been promoted as Special DGs.

Rajesh Ranjan and AP Maheshwari working as additional DGs in the BSF will now take charge as Special DGs.
