Benoy Tamang, a leader of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), was Friday unanimously elected chief executive of the autonomous hill council- the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA). "Tamang has been unanimously elected as the chief executive of the GTA," the council principal secretary RD Meena said here.
Tamang, general secretary of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), which has been spearheading a movement for a new state in West Bengal's Darjeeling hills, is currently behind bars after being arrested Aug 22 in connection with old cases.
GJM chief Bimal Gurung, the first chief executive of the GTA, resigned from the post demanding a separate Gorkhaland following the Congress-led UPA's endorsement of Telangana.
