According to a report in Times of India, the complaint was filed by an advocate Sushil Kumar Mishra. It said that after googling the term 'Top ten criminals of the world,' the results show an image of PM Modi.

Before filing the complaint, Mishra approached Google in 2015 but received no response. Later the company apologised by releasing a statement, "These results trouble us and are not reflective of the opinions of Google. Sometimes, the way images are described on the internet can yield surprising results to specific queries. We apologise for any confusion or misunderstanding this has caused. We're continually working to improve our algorithms to prevent unexpected results like this."

Order on Mishra's plea was passed after he challenged Chief Judicial Magistrate's dismissal of the application as a civil case. The court has also directed to register a criminal complaint against Google and its top officials.
