The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) on Friday examined four Delhi Police officials in a gold smuggling case in which exiled CBI chief Alok Kumar Verma has allegedly been directly involved. The four police officials, including an ACP and SHO, were summoned by the CVC to join the investigation against Verma. The CVC is probing corruption allegations that were levelled against Verma by his deputy Rakesh Asthana. The complaint alleges that Verma, during his tenure as Commissioner of Delhi Police, tried to help a gold smuggler get through the IGI Airport.

The complaint filed by Asthana reads, "On April 10, 2016, an Air passenger namely Saurabh Sharma was expected to arrive at IGI Airport New Delhi from Dubai by 9W587 at 9.53 am. Raj Kumar, ACP/IGI Airport had instructed Head Constable Pawan to receive and escort him."

Meanwhile, on receipt of intelligence Station House Officer of IGI Airport prevented head constable Pawan from extending the protocol to the above person. "On arrival when Saurab Sharma was intercepted by customs department and SHO Airport, he was found in possession of 3990 grams of gold," the complaint stated.

During the inquiry, the ACP refused to divulge the name of the person at whose instance he had directed Head Constable Pawan to escort the smuggler. "The inquiry was deliberately not allowed to reach its logical end," the complaint read.

Sources in the force stated that the ACP was allegedly working on the insistence of Verma. Sources also said that when the incident took place and came to the knowledge before a Special Commissioner of Police about the alleged activities of Commissioner of Police, the officer immediately applied for central deputation and left Delhi Police immediately.

Sources further stated that CVC is probing the exact role of Verma in the alleged corruption case that never reached the "logical end".

The development comes after Supreme Court asked the CVC, that exercises superintendence over the CBI in corruption matters, to complete within two weeks its inquiry into allegations against Verma levelled by Asthana. The two feuding officers, who have alleged each other of impropriety, have been sent on leave by the Centre.

  • Four Intelligence Bureau (IB) officers were dragged and beaten up inside exiled CBI Director Alok Kr Verma's house this week.
  • When the incident took place, sources said, a few senior Delhi Police officers, including a Special Commissioner-rank officer, rushed to Verma premises within half an hour to chalk out next plan of action.
  • Verma had alleged that the security personnel assumed that the IB officials were Special Director Rakesh Asthana men and were snooping.
