KANNUR: Gold ornaments worth around Rs 1.50 crore and cash amounting to Rs seven lakh were robbed from a cooperative bank at Ponnyam near Thalassery, police said on Saturday.

The incident came to light when the bank was opened for routine business this morning.

The robbers gained entry inside the building through a window before breaking the strong room wall with a gas cutter and decamped with the booty, police said.

No watchman was present in the bank premises when the incident took place, possibly in the wee hours, they said.

The bank had a stock of over Rs 4.50 crore worth mortgaged gold ornaments and thorough inspection of the remaining lockers could reveal the exact quantum of the loss, police added.
