As the lockdown continues in India, with the likelihood of an extension to tackle the coronavirus crisis, Mumbai's famous tiffin delivery service dabbawalas are now asking for financial aid from the state government to sustain their business.

Sources close to Zee Media say that the dabbawalas had stopped their tiffin service in Mumbai on March 31 in order to extend their support to the lockdown called by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to contain the spread of the pandemic.

With the tremendous spike in cases in Mumbai, forcing the government to implement restrictive measures, the dabbawalas were unable to meet their needs, suffering huge financial losses..

The Dabbawalas pick up home-cooked meals – mostly from the customers’ own houses and deliver it to their workplace. In the past 130 years, the dabbawalas never had to stop tiffin delivery. But with the likelihood of the lockdown not ending anytime soon, the company, which used to deliver nearly 200,000 home-cooked lunches a day, is still uncertain about the time in which it is going to resume its service.

In Maharashtra, the total number of coronavirus cases has risen to 1135, with 72 deaths.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday urged people to wear masks while going out of their homes. He also appealed to former defence and health services personnel, retired nurses and ward boys to join the "war" against coronavirus.

He also urged people willing to volunteer in their fight against coronavirus to give their contact numbers on the email id-Covidyoddha@gmail.Com. Thackeray also said that separate clinics for ailments like cough, cold and fever will be set up in every ward, and separate 'COVID hospitals' will be set up to ensure there is no transmission.

He further said that separate treatments will be given to asymptomatic patients, those showing mild symptoms and those with severe symptoms and other illnesses.

Thackeray has even written to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting supplying food grains at concessional rates to those with annual income up to Rs 1 lakh.

Uddhav has also expressed regret due to inconvenience caused by the citizens during the period of lockdown but cited that 'there was no other option.'
