Going back to Bangla roots? Trinamool may nominate Jaya Bachchan to Rajya Sabha from West Bengal

It seems Bollywood legend and senior Samajwadi Party leader Jaya Bachchan is going back to her Bangla roots, politically. 

According to a latest report by the Indian Express, Trinamool Congress is likely to nominate the celebrated actor from West Bengal for her fourth term in the Rajya Sabha. Jaya Bachchan’s third term is ending on April 3. 

Around 60 MPs will retire from the Upper House in April. With the BJP in brute majority in Uttar Pradesh, the party is likely to make major gains in the 10 seats in the state.

With current political scenario, Bachchan may not be able to get a fourth term if she continues to stay with the Samajwadi Party.

The Indian Express reports that the decision on Bachchan’s nomination would be officially announced after meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banrejee on March 18. 

Known for her fierce statements in the Upper House, Bachchan has also seen her fair share of drama in the Rajya Sabha. In 2015, the then Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P J Kurien had dubbed the actor-turned-politician 's behaviour as "irresponsible" when she sought more time for a Shiv Sena member speaking on the agrarian crisis while sitting.

"How can you say that ....it is irresponsible. I have to manage time. There are other members... We have to take up two bills after the discussion on agrarian crisis," a visibly agitated Kurien remarked. The remark followed Jaya's request to give more time to Shiv Sena member Sanjay Raut as he was making some very good points.

Kurien had earlier told Raut to wind up as he had spoken beyond his allotted time. Peeved by Chair's reaction, Bachchan while sitting on her seat protested, "This is not the way to speak. You cannot say irresponsible. You please expunge the word irresponsible..," she said, even as Raut continued to speak for two minutes before he concluded his speech on the issue.
