If we allow the mistakes committed in the forests to be repeated on the coastline, than we are likely to breed menace like naxalism, noted environmentalist Sunita Narain said today.

"The big issue right now is that we should not repeat the mistake committed in respect to our forest areas which breed Naxalism," Narain said during the inauguration of two-day regional media briefing workshop on 'Coasts, Coastal Population and their Concerns'.

The conference is organised by the Centre for Science and Environment and Goa Union of Journalists in the state university campus here.

She said that the issues that happened in the forests should not happen on the coastline, which is now reeling under severe pressures of development.

Goa's evironment minister Aleixo Sequira was present for the inaugural function held this morning.

"Our fishing community is doubly vulnerable. On one side, there is development on the other hand, there is pressure for conservation," she said adding that no regulations should take away their land and livelihood.

She said that the fishermen from Jambudwip in West Bengal and Bitharkanika national park in Orissa are either marginalised or thrown out of their places forcing them to resort to suicides.

Narain, who was the member on expert committee on draft Coastal Management Zone (CMZ) notification 2008, said that the CMZ was allowed to be lapsed with the recommendation to strengthen the CRZ.

"In April 2010, MoEF issued a pre-draft CRZ 2010. The careful scrutiny of pre-draft shows that it is not different from CMZ," she alleged.

Narain said that since the stakes on the coast are high, there are special dispensations awarded to certain areas.

"There is special consideration to CRZ within greater Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, Kerala, Sunderbans and Goa," she said.

"What is the rationale for this? Why is all India CRZ then not made special?," she questioned.
