Gauhati Lok Sabha constituency is witnessing a straight fight between BJP and Congress with both parties fielding strong women candidates. BJP took the hard call of not giving the ticket to three-time MP Bijoya Chakravarty who was axed owing to non-performance. Instead, the party has nominated former Guwahati mayor Queen Ojha. Ojha who started as AASU activist was earlier with AGP and is a well known political figure. In the run-up to the election, she got tangled in controversy when the opposition alleged that Ojha has furnished wrong information about her educational qualification.

Contesting against her is well-known Assamese TV and film personality Bobbeeta Sharma. She is also an entrepreneur and contested unsuccessfully from Gauhati East in Assembly election. Sharma is the general secretary in Assam Congress. Manoj Sharma of TMC and eminent lawyer Upamanyu Hazarika contesting as independent are other noteworthy candidates in the field of 17. 

There are around 21 lakh voters in Gauhati Lok Sabha constituency and there are 4 lakh minority voters. The assembly segments under Gauhati are Dudhnai (ST), Boko (SC), Chaygaon, Palasbari, Jalukbari, Dispur, Guwahati East, Guwahati West, Hajo, Barkhetry.  Who will speak up for Assam capital will be decided when Gauhati votes on April 23.
