Ganpati Visarjan or immersion of Lord Ganesh on Anant Chaturdashi turned fatal across several districts of Maharashtra. According to latest figures, at least 17 people have died de to drowning in different districts of the state. According to reports, at least five people are still missing, so death toll is likely to increase.

The deaths have been reported from nine places in the state. These are  Amravati - 4, Ratnagiri - 3, Nashik - 2, Sindhudurg - 2, Satara - 2, Thane - 1, Dhule - 1, Buldhana - 1 and Bhandara-1. 

Thursday was the last day of Ganesh puja so all the major mandals immersed their idols yesterday. However, these tragic incidents have marred the mood of festivity in many places. In neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, boat capsize during Ganesh immersion lead to death of at least 11 people. The local administration has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh for next of the deceased in Bhopal.
