Four staff members of a nationalised bank were killed and its assistant manager critically injured when unidentified assailants raided its branch at a border town in Nadia district.

However, it was yet to be ascertained whether the bank was looted last night.

Additional superintendent of police, Anappa E, said some official work was going on at United Bank of India's Karimpur branch, about 100 km from district headquarters Krishnagar, bordering Bangladesh.

All the bodies were found with their throats slit. The assistant manager was critically injured and he was admitted to a local hospital.

Anappa, who was on the way to the spot, said prima facie it appeared to be the handiwork of dacoits.

District magistrate Omkar Singh Meena said the BSF and the police were alerted following the incident.
