Four persons have been arrested for allegedly vandalising a statue of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi at a park in Awas Vikas colony here, the police said today.

DIG (Vindhyachal Range) Ratan Kumar Srivastav said local residents Ajay Kumar Divewdi, Sandip Kumar Tiwari, Shivam Sharma and Rahul Gautam were arrested yesterday from the railway station while they were trying to leave Mirzapur.

They were all residents of Awas Vikas colony.

On the reasons for destroying the statue, the DIG said "it was just a mischief" and did not elaborate further.

He said one more accused would be arrested soon.

The statue of the former prime minister was installed at in the park under Katra Kotwali Police Station area some ten years ago and was found broken on Sunday morning.

Engraged local Congress leaders had demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.

State Congress President Raj Babbar had also visited the park and sat on dharna as part of the state-wide call for protests by the party which had also submitted a memorandum to Governor Ram Naik in this connection yesterday.
