Veteran freedom fighter, former MLA and former Mayor of Ahmedabad, Vadilal Ratilal Kamdar, passed away after prolonged illness on Monday morning. He was 91.

Kamdar had participated in the freedom struggle right from his very young days. He had also courted jail during the famous Limbdi Satyagraha and on other occasions during the freedom struggle.

After the Independence was won in 1947, Kamdar held a number of organisational responsibilities in Congress party. He was a close associate of former Saurashtra leader and former minister Ratubhai Adani. He was also responsible in setting up of the first full-fledged multi-discipline Dr Jivraj Mehta Memorial Hospital in the city. Kamdar was Mayor of Ahmedabad for a year from April 1976 to April 1977. He was elected MLA from the Shahpur constituency in 1980.

He had also served as chairman of state relief committee. He had also served as chairman of Gujarat government's water distribution board and Government of India's Animal welfare board.

Family sources said that Kamdar's Besna would take place on Thursday from 9 am to 11 am at Nirman Bhawan at Ellisbridge.
