Even as the rescue operation in Uttarakhand nearing its end, the government on Friday said army and air force personnel will remain in the flood-ravaged state for another fortnight to carry out relief operation.
The Uttarakhand government has claimed that the exact number of the dead can be ascertained after the rescue and recovery phase is over. Officials say about 600 people have been declared dead so far.
With 3,000 people still reported missing, army chief Gen Bikram Singh said his troops and IAF personnel would continue their operations till the last person is evacuated. “Our endeavour is to locate all our citizens, wherever they are, and get them out,” Gen Singh told reporters in Gauchar after his interaction with his officers and men.
Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, who attended the Guard of Honour for the 20 people who died in an IAF chopper crash, said in Dehradun that while the rescue teams are aiming to complete their work by Saturday, the IAF teams will stay on in Uttarakhand for 15 more days for relief operations. He also said that rescue work is going on in full swing and those stranded in Badrinath will also be rescued soon.
Thirteen days after the disaster, around 1,400 people are still stranded in Badrinath, while Harsil sector has been totally evacuated. “There are people in Badrinath. Priority has been given to take out people who are unwell, handicapped, elderly people, women, children and then get the youth and others. The estimate is that in two days the operations should be complete,” Shinde said.
He also said that there is still no clarity on how many bodies are buried under the debris. Speaking on relief for the locals, Shinde said, “The locals have also been badly affected by the floods. The chief secretary has been told to list all the requirements of the state.”
Meanwhile, a Pawan Hans helicopter, engaged in rescue operations, made an emergency landing at Harsil. No casualties have been reported.
