A 22-year-old married woman from Nalasopara hanged herself at the couple's home, allegedly fed up with the constant pressure from her husband to consume mutton. The vegan woman's resistance only led to further taunts and torture from the accused husband, police said.According to Nalasopara police, the deceased Puja Dhiraj, 22, a resident of Ami Park apartments in Patankar Park area of Nalasopara West hanged herself with a dupatta. Her husband, Dhiraj Lukam, 26, who works with an event-management firm in Goregaon, also denied her permission to work."Her kin have complained that her husband has been torturing her since March and forcing her to eat mutton. As a vegetarian, she was very much opposed to it, which led to further taunts and assault," said a police officer at Nalasopara station."The woman ended her life allegedly unable to withstand the pressure. Also she was told to quit her job in an imitation jewellery firm in Malad," said the officer."We have arrested the accused under section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code. Vasai court has remanded him in police custody till April 29," said Suhas Kamble, investigating officer, Nalasopara police station.
