AHMEDABAD: An alert has been sounded for people living in low-lying areas of districts in central and south Gujarat following release of water from the Narmada dam.

Those living in low-lying areas of Surat, Bharuch, Narmada, Kheda, Anand and Panchmahal district have been warned
following the release of nearly 5.30 lakh cusecs of water since Monday night, an official said here on Tuesday.

He said the authorities would start evacuating people from the areas if the situation "gets bad".

Water was released from the Narmada dam following heavy rainfall in Vidarbha and Marathwada regions of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, western Madhya Pradesh and south-east Rajasthan, he said.
