The deer were run over by the Gokul Express yesterday, divisional forest officer RK Singh said, adding that a case under the Wildlife Protection Act had been lodged against the train driver and guard.

Prima facie it seems that the incident occurred as the train was moving at high speed, he said.

"Despite repeated requests, the railways have not issued any directive to check the speed of trains passing through the jungle," Singh said.
