Five pilgrims were killed and eight others were injured when a Bolero jeep in which they were traveling rammed into a stationary trailer from behind on Jaunpur-Rae Bareili Highway near Nikamuddin area in Machhlishahr district of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.

Residents of Kathirav area in Varanasi, 12 persons had hired a Bolero jeep to visit  Kade Manikpur Dham to offer prayers on the seventh day of the holy month of Shravan on Saturday. The accident occurred when the driver lost control over the vehicle and rammed into a stationary trailer from behind near Nikamuddin at around 2 am.

Villagers and Police rushed on the accident site to rescue pilgrims trapped in the Bolero. Four of them died on the spot while eight injured pilgrims were admitted in a hospital in Machhlishahr where one died during treatment.

Three seriously injured pilgrims were referred to BHU Trauma Centre on Saturday morning. The police said that the injured pilgrims told that that the driver of the jeep lost control when he caught a wink and rammed into the stationary from behind.
