With an aim to provide women with quality higher education in the field of technology and research, India’s first technical university for women was inaugurated on Thursday by Chief Minister Shiela Dixit.
Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTU) was created in May after up gradation of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT), a constituent college under Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University.
The new university will be offering four B.Tech courses and four M.Tech programmes that include masters in computer application.
The IGDTU was already offering B.Tech and MCA courses in which over 1,200 students were enrolled.
The university will now enrol 120 students in the M.Tech programmes this year.
“Women’s participation in technical education plays an important role in the economic growth and development of the country. The IGDTU for Women has been set up to impart quality education to women so that well-qualified female engineers become part of the workforce to meet growing demands of the industry,” said Dikshit.
The sale of admission brochure started from 1 June and the counselling for M.Tech programmes is scheduled for 15 July, an official spokesperson said.
