A fire broke out today in the ante-chamber of the city's mayor Sovan Chatterjee but prompt firemen doused the flame by using foam before it could spread.

Fire-brigade sources said there was no injury to anyone in the fire which was suspected to have originated from an air-conditioned machine.

Even as the fire was doused, thick smoke enveloped mayor's secretariat and record room, sources said, adding that Chatterjee was not in the city now.

The incident created panic in the century-old building, forcing the employees to rush out.

Firemen were investigating the cause of the fire and the extent of damage.
