CHENNAI: A fire on Tuesday night gutted at least two floors of the national headquarters of the Indian Bank here, officials said.

Eight fire tenders battled the flames that spread to the sixth floor office of the bank's chairman and managing director.

A strong breeze coming from the Bay of Bengal, about 150 metres away, caused the flames to spread from the third floor upwards, fire service official added.

The first three floors of the building comprise a branch of the bank's commercial wing and the remaining three house its administrative offices.

Fire officials are yet to establish the cause for the fire.

Bank officials were not available for comment.
