FDI will lead to flood of Chinese goods: Nitin Gadkari

India will be swamped by Chinese products if foreign direct investment (FDI) pours into multi-brand trade, said BJP president Nitin Gadkari while speaking to the media on the day of a nationwide strike on Thursday.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said while his party was waging a "battle for the existence of poor", stores opened in the wake of the government's decision to allow FDI in multi-brand retail will be swamped by products from China, and small traders in India will suffer.

"Products will come from there (China), ending the businesses of small traders here," said Gadkari, adding that, "There is a perception that the decision (to allow FDI in retail) has been taken under foreign pressure."

Admitting that the BJP had not yet thought about bringing about a no-confidence vote against the Congress-led government, Gadkari said the government had announced the FDI in trade to divert attention from the numerous corruption scams it faces.

He demanded a rollback of decisions on the hike in diesel price, FDI in multi-brand retail and a cap on subsidised cooking gas cylinders.
