In an apparent retort to Rahul Gandhi's suit-boot ki sarkar jibe, the BJP has claimed the Congress President wore a jacket worth USD 995 at a concert oragnised by his party in the poll-bound state while being "indifferent" to the woes of people.
In a tweet, the BJP alleged the Congress government in Meghalaya was mired in corruption. It said instead of attending a musical event, Gandhi should have given a report card of the state government.
"So @OfficeOfRG, soot(pun intended!)-boot ki sarkar with black money fleeced from Meghalayan State exchequer by rampant corruption? Instead of singing away our woes, you could have given a report card of your inefficient govt in Meghalaya! Your indifference mocks us!," the BJP's Meghalaya unit tweeted.
The party's state unit also tweeted an image of a jacket similar to the one Gandhi wore having a price tag of USD 995 (little over Rs 63,000).
The tweet suggesting that the jacket worn by Gandhi was bought with black money, drew a sharp reaction from Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury, who alleged the BJP was leading a "suit-boot ki sarkar" at the Centre, and had no moral authority to question Gandhi.
She said the saffron party was "frustrated" due to Gandhi's "rising popularity".
Chowdhury accused the Modi government of being "idle", and said it should rather focus on issues such as the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, and rising prices of fuel and vegetables.
"Their frustration is directly proportionate to the rising popularity of Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi connects with the young. So, this idle and suit boot ki sarkar has no right to talk about it," she said.
"Those who wove own name on suit, do they have any morale authority to question Rahul Gandhi's jacket? How do they know rate of the jacket? I will show the jacket can be bought at Rs 700. What will they say then?" she asked.
Gandhi had mocked Prime Minister Modi with his "suit-boot ki sarkar" jibe when he wore a suit with his name finely embroidered on the stripes for a meeting with the then US president Barack Obama. The suit was later auctioned and bought for over 4.3 crore by a Surat businessman.
Gandhi is in Meghalaya to campaign for the party for the upcoming Assembly polls.
He had attended the concert in Shillong yesterday, apparently to reach out to the young voters.
Dressed in blue denim trousers and a black jacket, he urged the youth to love and respect each other to make the country strong.

Kanni shawls or Burberry jackets. If our leaders want to dress well then good for them. Why shouldn’t they spend their salaries on things they like?
— Omar Abdullah (@OmarAbdullah) January 31, 2018
Rahul Gandhi in a thousand dollar Burberry quilted jacket. Reminds me of Sonia Gandhi's sable coat which was refitted by Fendi. Self-validation by @OfficeOfRG of his cheesy "1% of India's population gets 73% of its wealth" comment. #PakoraTales pic.twitter.com/xJ0eRcjsX5

Rahul wearing a Burberry jacket. Guess they only had a problem when Modi used a decent scarf. How dare a chaiwallah own the good things that befits shehzadas. Right? https://t.co/fcCsDp9vd3

Totally agree. Rahul Gandhi @OfficeOfRG is the most handsome and cutest politician of our times. His dimpled smile is gorgeous. And he looks absolutely dashing in that black jacket, Burberry or whatever! https://t.co/E5wSIIFd4j

This made my day. Man who derides others for wearing expensive clothes, and coined the phrase 'suit-boot ki sarkar' because of it, himself wears a Rs 68,000 Burberry jacket. (h/t @Iyervval) pic.twitter.com/aNY4MnxYZf

Ache Din?? Dear @OfficeOfRG is the economy doing so well under @narendramodi that you went from "torn kurta" to an expensive designer jacket in such a short period of time? Or perhaps the torn kurta was just a dikhava i guess ;) https://t.co/AGt1e3Jpxo

Appalling hypocrisy from a man who blames this govt for being pro-rich and claims the PM wears expensive clothes. Strutting around wearing a Rs 63k jacket is oh so pro-poor. And his loyalists in the MSM maintain a studied silence. The ecosystem is doing a great job! pic.twitter.com/VGTjzhJRHs
