The farmers' protest is gradually intensifying with support pouring in from different corners. The talks between the government and the farmers have also failed to yield any result so far. In fact, the Farmer unions have called for 'Bharat Bandh' on December 8 against the three new farm laws- Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

The leaders of the unions during a joint press conference at the Singhu Border on Friday, December 4 said that the government should repeal the newly enacted law. The protesting farmers have also planned to burn effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Notably, the fifth round of talks between the farmer unions and the central government is scheduled to be held on Saturday, December 5.

"Yesterday, we told the Government that the farm laws should be withdrawn. We have given a call for Bharat Bandh on December 8," said laws. Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU-Lakhowal) General Secretary HS Lakhowal.

"We need to take this protest forward. Government has to take back the farm laws," added Hannan Mollah, General Secretary, All India Kisan Sabha.

On Thursday, December 3, the Centre and the farmer unions had the fourth round of meeting which was again inconclusive. However, the government is hopeful of an outcome. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar had said in the meeting that the government is open to all kinds of discussion with the farmers.

"The government will discuss points that emerged at the meeting on Friday and hopes that talks will move towards finality when the next round of discussions is held on Saturday," the minister had said.

Farmers from states like Punjab and Haryana are up-in-arms against three new laws related to farming. They are worried that the new legislation may eliminate the Minimum Support Price (MSP) on their yield.

MSP or the Minimum Support Price is the price guaranteed by the Centre to farmers for their crops.
