Hundreds of farmers will hold a 'mahapanchayat' in Haryana's Karnal today (September 7) in a demonstration against the lathi charge on farmers that happened on August 28. After the call for mahapanchayat, the government has deployed central forces, suspended mobile internet, and has ordered a ban on the gathering of people in the city.

On August 28, the Haryana police had lathi-charged a group of farmers protesting, who were disrupting traffic movement at a highway near Karnal; over 10 farmers were injured in the incident.

Haryana's Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) chief, Gurnam Singh Chaduni said that they have given a deadline of September 6 for their demands to be met. They held a meeting with district administration officials on Monday that failed to yield any satisfactory response after which they decided to hold 'maha panchayat on Tuesday morning before going to the gherao mini-secretariat.

"We will hold a peaceful protest, but if the administration stops us, then we will break barricades," BKU Haryana chief Chaduni said, adding that farmers have no plan to block the national highway.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), which is an umbrella body of farmers' protesting against the farm laws, has threatened to siege the Karnal mini-secretariat on Tuesday if the protestors' demands were not met.

After the announcement of 'mahapanchayat', the Haryana government earlier ordered mobile internet suspension from Monday 12:30 pm to Tuesday midnight in Karnal and later decided to extend suspension in four adjoining districts, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, and Panipat, where suspension came into effect from 12 am.

According to officials, 40 companies of security personnel, including 10 companies of central paramilitary forces, have been deployed in Karnal. The local authorities have also imposed prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPC in the district.
