Fali Nariman's son, Rohinton, is new Solicitor General of India
He replaces Gopal Subramanium who resigned as solicitor general after Kapil Sibal overlooked him for a recent case.
Senior lawyer Rohinton Nariman was today appointed the Solicitor General of India.The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved the name of Rohinton, 54, sources in the Law Ministry said.Rohinton, son of an eminent jurist Fali S Nariman, replaces Gopal Subramanium who resigned as solicitor general in the wake of Nariman Jr being appointed as special counsel to represent the government in a 2G spectrum allocation scam related case in the Supreme Court a fortnight ago, apparently without his knowledge.Rohinton has been appearing in various constitutional and corporate cases in the Supreme Court and High Courts.He argued for Mukesh Ambani's RIL, along with senior advocate Harish Salve, in the dispute over the supply and pricing of gas from KG basin between the Ambani brothers.Nariman was designated as a senior advocate at the age of 37 years in 1993 when the then Chief Justice of India MN Venkatachaliah amended the rules reducing the limit of the minimum age of 45 years for designating a lawyer as a senior advocate. Rohinton will have a three-year tenure, according to an official notification.
