Exit poll results: NDA coming back to power

Exit polls are surveys with pollsters asking voters to tell their voting choice as they exit the polling booths. That data is then added up to compute a party's possible vote share and from which a party's possible seat share is extrapolated.

All exit poll results must be taken with a pinch of salt as they rarely get the numbers right. It can, however, give you an idea what the electorate tilt was during the elections.

If we look at last three Lok Sabha elections, 2004 result was most surprising as the exit polls predicted a return of BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. But the results threw a surprise when the Congress emerged as the single largest party with 145 seats while the BJP was pushed to the second position with 138 seats.

In 2009, the exit polls did predict a UPA win but failed to catch the swing in Congress’s favour, with the grand old party ending up with 61 more seats than it did in 2004.

In the last election in 2014, the exit polls didn't completely pick up the swing in Modi's favour Most gave the NDA far less than the 336 seats if finally won.

The 2019 Lok Sabha Elections were conducted in a seven-phased manner, starting from the phase on April 11. The results of the polls will be declared on May 23.
