If the proposal passed by the standing committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is approved, youngsters’ favourite hangout, Vastrapur lake, will be known by a new name — Narsinh Mehta lake. The standing committee has passed a resolution to name the city’s lakes, gardens and municipal libraries after eminent Gujarati litterateurs. But the general board of the civic body is yet to give the proposal its approval.
“The names of Gujarati poets and authors are just a blur in most people’s minds. And very few people have any idea what they looked like,” said Asit Vora, standing committee chairman. “Our motive behind renaming lakes and libraries in the city is to ensure that the great Gujarati writers are not forgotten. Besides, it will also inspire people to read their works,” he added. The civic body has taken this decision as a part of the golden jubilee celebrations of Gujarat. If the proposal gets the AMC board’s approval, the Vastrapur lake will be known as Narsinh Mehta lake.
