Eunuchs will now have a role to play in pulse polio campaign, with the Uttar Pradesh government deciding to take their help in motivating parents to get their children vaccinated.
    
"The department will hire services of eunuchs, who will be sent to high risk areas in the district to motivate people to get polio drops administered to their children," chief medical officer Hari Prakash told reporters.
    
He said families, which had so far desisted from getting polio drops administered to their kids, will be targetted during the campaign.
    
Despite best efforts and massive publicity, which included assistance of school children and religious leaders, to make pulse polio campaign successful, desired results could not be achieved, health department sources admitted.

Surveillance Medical Officer of the World Health Organisation (WHO) V C Giri pointed out that last year 12 cases of P3 virus were reported from the district. The last case was reported from Shivpur block in December 2008.
