The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday attached cash worth Rs 89.68 lakhs under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in a money laundering case involving the nephew of former Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal.

The ED started its investigations after the CBI filed a case and chargesheeted Mahesh Kumar, a staff member of the Railway Board, along with Bansal's nephew Vijay Singla, Sandeep Goyal and seven other accused under Section 120B of the IPC, and sections 7, 8 and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Kumar was posted as the general manager of Western Railways, and investigations revealed that he wanted to get himself appointed as member (electrical) at the Railway Board instead of member (staff). He was in touch with N Manjunath, who in turn was acquainted with Sandeep Goyal, a friend of Vijay Singla.

"Singla demanded Rs 10 crore from Manjunath, while Goyal was to be the conduit, in order to get Kumar posted as member (electrical). But while he was trying to pay a token amount, CBI officials raided Singla's office in Chandigarh and recovered Rs 89,68,000, while he was caught red-handed. During this time, Bansal was railway minister," ED officials said.

Manjunath, on behalf of Kumar, was persuading various railway contractors and vendors to arrange a bribe amount to ensure Kumar's promotion. He lured them by saying they too would get postings of their choice once Kumar gets the promotion.

"The amount was routed through accounts of various companies and individuals, while hawala agents helped out. The money was finally delivered to singla at his office, and this money has been attached under sections of PMLA," said ED officials.
