DEHRA DUN: Four people were crushed to death and three others injured when an elephant ran amok in Haridwar on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at Khuddaheri village in the district when the elephant, which apparently came from nearby Rajaji Park, attacked villager working in fields, forest officials said.

Four people were killed on the spot and three others injured, they said adding the identities of the deceased were not immediately known and injured have been taken to nearby hospitals.

The forest department has issued shoot at sight order against the tusker, which is running aggressively in the nearby jungles.

"We are trying to track the elephant and will be killed," DFO Haridwar Nishant Verma said.

Top forest officials including Chief Wildlife Warden S K Chandola rushed to the spot and to take stock of the situation.
