Editor of a daily Urdu newspaper, Avadhnama, was arrested for reprinting a controversial caricature that was originally carried by the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. Shirin Dalvi, the accused, was produced at a Thane court on Wednesday and was granted bail by the magistrate. Dalvi was warned to not repeat the act.

The controversial cartoon was published in the January 17 issue of the daily that is published in both Urdu and Hindi from Mumbai. Complainant Nusrat Ali filed a case alleging that the cartoon of Prophet Mohammed hurt the sentiments of its readers. Dalvi was arrested from her residence in Mumbra by the police and booked for outraging the religious sentiments of Muslim community by insulting their religion with malicious intent under Section 295 (A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Avadhnama is also published in Lucknow, Faizabad, Aligarh, Azamgarh, Saharanpur besides Mumbai.
