RAIPUR: Police on Wednesday ordered a probe into the beating up of tribal students by a drunken school headmaster in a Chhattisgarh school.

"We have reports that a primary school headmaster resorted to cane charge on several students without any reason. In fact, he started beating up the kids mercilessly after consuming liquor while on duty," said Himanshu Gupta, police chief of Korba district.

The incident took place Monday afternoon in a government-run primary school in Orai village, 252 km northeast of capital Raipur, where over 150 students, majority from poor tribal families, are enrolled.

"We have ordered a thorough probe into the matter. The guilty teacher will be punished if indicted by the probe report," Gupta said.

School education department has also taken serious note of the complaints made by students' parents who sought suspension and immediate action against headmaster M S Kanwar.

Six of the 25 students who sustained serious multiple wounds, were taken to hospital. After the incident, panic-stricken students have refused to attend school.
