‘Failure’ in execution of many civic projects and ‘corruption’ at the top level, would be the main plank of the party to garner support of people in the elections, said the leaders
Banners are ready and party leaders are working overtime to coin slogans that will immediately connect them to voters of their wards. Lakhs of voters in Ahmedabad may get confused in the din that political parties are about to create when they start their campaign for the upcoming Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections slated for October 10.
While the BJP leaders are busy publishing a book on development —worth Rs 5,000 crore, they claim — containing successful completion of many ambitious projects like storm water lines, BRTS and Riverfront project, the Congress is set to 'expose' BJP's 'inefficiency' by highlighting its 'failure' to provide even the basic amenities in Ahmedabad.
Congress leaders, who have already completed work on the election manifesto, said they would take up local civic issues during the upcoming election campaign. 'Failure' in execution of many civic projects and 'corruption' at the top level, would be the main plank of the party to garner support of people in the elections, said the leaders.
"The BJP might boast of BRTS and storm water drainage lines as its projects but we will remind voters that these projects have been developed with the help of central government's Jawaharlal Nehru National Renewal Mission and with 35% money given by the central government," said a senior Congress leader and former deputy chief minister Narhari Amin.
He said the storm water drainage line is a failed project as even during one inch rain, the city roads get flooded. "The BRTS corridor also got flooded in monsoon," he said, adding that the BRTS buses are turning out to be as deadly as the AMTS buses with increasing number of accidents.
Moreover, the Cong is also set to remind voters of some 'big promises' made by BJP, which it failed to keep. "Modi said that he would turn Ahmedabad into Singapore. Has Ahmedabad got any of the facilities BJP had promised? 10% of Ahmedabad areas do not have drainage and 20% of the city get contaminated drinking water. The newly-merged areas, known as the New West Zone, do not have adequate streetlights and women feel insecure. What kind of development work Modi and BJP talking about?" asked Amin.
