It was a soiree the capital sees often — opulent, grandiose, and flamboyant. Exotic cheeses to complement rare chardonnays, expensive champagnes, diamond-clad men and women, their regal gait — the Saturday evening had all the trappings of a lush affair.

Stringing them in a common thread and setting the dinner apart, however, was how the starry-eyed who's who of Delhi were eager to share the dais with the star guest and get that exclusive selfie with the son of the American President.

Donald Trump Jr was the cynosure of all eyes at a plush five-star hotel as he indulged the audience in a freewheeling conversation about his love for India, professional ties with the country, life after his father's presidency, among others.

As wines and single malts flowed freely through the night, Trump Jr tried to laugh his way into charming the audience, most of whom were his clients who have bought a piece of moon in his luxurious project in Gurugram — Trump Towers. That they were a class apart was visible in the special arena for their seating. 'Trump Tower Owners' it read. The heir of this real estate ostentation, on the other hand, was anything but. Dressed in a black sharp suit and a pink tie, he looked devoid of any conceitedness that may come with a name as heavy as his.

"I have worked my way to the glass office because my father believes in learning the hard way. I did not have it easy — I drove heavy machinery and cleared golf courses for minimum wages," he said.

The man of the moment then veered towards India Inc, and his love for the country. Hailing his business relationship that has blossomed into friendship, he said the energy here is infectious, which helped him strike some fruitful deals, and egged him to invest 10 times more. "Indians' entrepreneurial spirit and natural intelligence draw me to them. Their enthusiasm, too. It is the one thing that I both hate and love at the same time," Trump Jr said.

Amid all the smooth talk, the suave businessman did take a dig on the Indian media. "Media here can be very vicious," he remarked, acknowledging swiftly, how it has treated him "fairly". He recounted how his observation about even impoverished Indians keeping a robust morale, was reported as "Trump Jr loves poor people".
