The cadres raised slogans against the governments and wanted them to protect the farmers, who were agitating for the last one year seeking among other things waiver of loans from nationalised banks.

DMK Farmers Wing secretary K P Ramalingam, who led the demonstration, said that over one lakh farmers were protesting in 36 places across the state, to highlight their plight.

This demonstration would be a clarion call for a bigger protest across the country, as both the governments continued to neglect the just demands of the farmers, Ramalingam said.
