Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s estranged father-in-law Rajendra Vadra (71) died on Friday amid contradictory reports about the circumstances of his death.

A police source said Vadra was found hanging from a ceiling fan in a guest house in south Delhi on Thursday night. But a family member said Vadra was suffering from cirrhosis of the liver and was discharged from a private hospital two weeks back. On Thursday night, he suddenly took ill again when his blood sugar shot up and he had to be rushed to hospital, where he died.

The police are tight-lipped and officials maintain they have neither registered an FIR nor are they investigating the possibility of suicide. At the crematorium, the log book entry was along similar lines to the statement by the family member to DNA. It identified the hospital where he died as the government-run Safdarjung hospital.

A hospital source confirmed Vadra was brought in on Thursday night. But he refused to disclose details. The cremation took place on Friday at 4:30 pm and was a quiet affair.

Robert Vadra had disowned father

Only immediate family members attended the cremation of Rajendra Vadra (71), father-in-law of Priyanka Vadra, on Friday.

Vadra died under mysterious circumstances with family saying he died of cirrohis of liver while police sources said he was found hanging from the ceiling fan at a guest house in Delhi.

Sonia Gandhi, Rahul, Priyanka and Priyanka’s husband and son of the deceased, Robert, were among those who attended. The area was sealed off for security reasons.
The father-son estrangement was widely reported in the media about eight years ago. In January 2002, Robert had issued public notices in newspapers, declaring that he had nothing to do with his father Rajendra and brother Richard, and that attempts by them to gain favours by pretending to act on his behalf should be disregarded. The notice was issued by advocate Arun Bhardwaj.

The Congress had informed its chief ministers, state unit chiefs and senior leaders that Robert had severed ties with his father and brother, and that “no favour sought by them in Robert’s name should be entertained”.
