Former chief minister of Maharashtra Vilasrao Deshmukh faced embarrassment on many occasions as he was named in few controversies including the Adarsh housing society scam, irregularities in allotting land to Subhash Ghai’s Whistling Woods and court strictures for shielding a private moneylender.

Though he was not found guilty in the Adarsh scam, an affidavit filed in the Bombay high court in April alleged that Deshmukh might own two benami flats in the controversial Colaba society.

Deshmukh was the chief minister when the final nod was given to the society meant for housing war veterans and widows. However, during his recent deposition before the Adarsh commission, he shifted onus on former CMs Ashok Chavan and Sushilkumar Shinde.

In February, the high court held Deshmukh responsible for the irregularities in allotment of 20 acres of land to Whistling Woods, a training institute of filmmaker Subhash Ghai. The court said that the agreement signed by the Ghai institute was illegal, arbitrary and without authority of the law. It was also stated that Deshmukh misused his official position and illegally signed the agreement papers and gave undue favours to the institute.

The high court had also slapped a fine of Rs10 lakh on the state government for shielding private moneylender Dilip Sananda, who is also a Congress MLA. Farmers were left to face hardship under the pressure from the political leadership to shield the moneylender.

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India, in its recent report, had indicted Deshmukh for preferential allotment of a 23,840 sqm plot in Mumbai to Manjara Charitable Trust, which is controlled by him.
