Amaresh Singh, husband of Neetu Singh a third-year Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) student who has been deported to Nepal by Pune police, is a research scholar at the Jawaharlal Nehru University here, and is likely to submit his thesis in a couple of days.

"He has been doing his PhD thesis on issues pertaining to Sri Lanka since 2004," a varsity official said today.

Singh has been pursuing his PhD in South Asia division of School of International Studies (SIS) of the JNU.

"He quite sincere and sober," a faculty of member of SIS said.

Singh, who is an influential person and has been nominated as a Nepali Congress' member of Parliament in Nepal, is staying in the JNU hostel, and regularly visits his country.

According to Pune police, Neetu Singh, a student undergoing an editing course at FTII, was deported on December 5 after she was found involved in "anti-national activities".

The home ministry has sought a report on the issue, as the Pune police authorities had "exceeded" their brief in her deportation.
