The number of dengue cases in Delhi is hitting new highs each week, with the number surpassing COVID cases in the city.
Delhi was one of the worst-hit cities during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, with hospital resources and oxygen running out each day. Now, the COVID-19 tally in the national capital has been surpassed by another familiar infection- dengue fever.
Delhi has not witnessed more cases of dengue than of COVID in the past week, as per reports. The national capital saw a total of 123 cases of coronavirus in the past week, while the number of dengue cases was 243, touching a new high.
The first dengue death of the year has also been reported in Delhi on October 18, 2021. Till now in 2021, Delhi has recorded a total of 723 cases. As per official data, the number of dengue cases for the same time period in 2020 was 622, making 2021 the year with the highest dengue cases since 2018.
According to experts and doctors, nearly half of the dengue patients in Delhi hospitals are children. Doctors have also been facing difficulties while diagnosing the vector-borne disease correctly as both dengue and COVID-19 have somewhat similar symptoms.
There are multiple similarities in the symptoms of dengue fever and COVID-19, which lead to a delayed diagnosis. The similar symptoms of the two infections include body pain, myalgia, chills, fever, and nausea.
Citizens of Delhi have been asked to keep clean water in their homes in an air-tight vessel for daily usage, and to not let any water collect in open areas such as drains and puddles. Experts have also advised parents to make sure that kids are wearing full-sleeved clothes.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has launched a campaign to spread awareness about dengue but has also made allegations that the Centre-governed municipal corporations are not taking necessary steps to curb the spread of the deadly infection.
