Delhi to face water shortage due to high ammonia level, Wazirabad plant functioning at full capacity

All three phases of the water treatment plant in Delhi's Wazirabad are running to their full capacity after continuous efforts of Delhi Jal Board to rationalize the water supply in the plant which got affected due to discharge of high-level pollutants from Haryana in river Yamuna.

The water production impacted at water treatment plants at Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla after ammonia level in the Yamuna increased to 3.2 mgl due to discharge of high-level pollutants on Monday morning.

However, the Wazirabad plant is now running in its full capacity and the ammonia level in the Yamuna has decreased to 1.6 mgl.

Still water supply in areas including — North East Delhi, West Delhi, North Delhi, Central Delhi, South Delhi, including Delhi Cantt. and New Delhi Municipal Council areas is expected to remain affected, therefore, people are advised to make judicious use of water tankers.

The affected zones include North, South, Central and parts of West and Northeast Delhi such as Civil Lines, Malka Ganj, Timarpur, Azad Market, Karol Bagh, Paharganj, Patel Nagar, Shadipur, Rajendra Nagar, President Estate, the NDMC area, Ramlila Maidan, Delhi Gate, Subhash Park, Darya Ganj, Gulabi Bagh, Jahangirpuri, Kewal Park and the adjoining areas of North and Central Delhi.

On Monday, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that high-ammonia levels due to industrial waste being dumped into the Yamuna river at Panipat in Haryana forced the government to shut down operations at Chandrawal and Wazirabad water treatment plants.

Taking to his Twitter handle, Kejriwal stated that the Haryana government has assured that they will release additional water soon to dilute the presence of ammonia.

"High ammonia levels due to industrial waste being dumped into the Yamuna at Panipat has forced Chandrawal and Wazirabad Water Treatment Plants to stop operations. Haryana govt has assured Delhi that they will release additional water soon to dilute the presence of ammonia," he wrote.

Kejriwal said he was closely monitoring the situation and directed the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to ensure that no part of the city goes dry.

However, he said that water supply parts of Central and North Delhi might be affected and the agency is working to improve the situation at the earliest.

"I am monitoring the situation closely and have directed DJB to ensure no part of Delhi goes dry, even if it means diverting water from other plants to Wazirabad. Parts of Central and North Delhi may be affected. We are working to improve the situation at the earliest," he said in a follow-up tweet.
