A sanitation worker suffocated to death after allegedly falling in the sewer of a building which he had entered to clean in Dwarka's Dabri area on Friday.

Anil, 37, while climbing down the sewer, slipped and the rope around his waist broke, following which he fell in the 20-feet deep sewer.

He is survived by his wife Rani and three children – aged 11 years, 7 years and 3 years.

As the reports emerged that the family of the worker could not even afford to cremate him, Twitter users launched a crowdfunding campaign to help his wife and three children.

Police said Anil was hired by a person named Satbir Kala to clean the sewer line as water was stagnant in his building.

During the investigation, it was learnt that Anil was not given any protective gear and even the rope was not strong enough to bear the tension, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse said on Sunday.

Anil was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead, police said.

A case was registered in this connection, the police said, adding Satbir was arrested.

The incident comes just a week after five persons died due to asphyxiation when they entered a sewage treatment plant in Moti Nagar area in the national capital.

Crowdfunding campaign to help the family

According to the crowdfunding page on ketto.org, he died just six days after his four-month-old son succumbed to pneumonia.

Rani said Anil cremated their son in the evening of September 8 and returned to work the next morning, a Hindustan Times report said.

Anil lived with his wife and three children in a rented room in Dabri Extension. “My husband aspired for a decent job but cleaning was all he knew,” Rani said as she waited at a crematorium for help with her husband's last rites.

The mourning family even struggled with arranging funds for last rites. They were helped by local residents who arranged money for cremation.

However, the real struggle for Rani and her three children begun now as the family has lost the sole breadwinner.

As the story of the family was shared on social media, many users came forward with helping hands. They launched a crowdfunding campaign to help the family.

Within hours, generous donors had collected over Rs 8 lakh of the targeted Rs 24 lakh.
