Heavy rain showers accompanied by strong, dusty winds hit parts of Delhi-NCR on Sunday evening, i.e., June 1, bringing much-needed relief from heat. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted dust and thunderstorms in Delhi and surrounding areas including Uttar Pradesh's Noida and Haryana's Gurugram.
In a weather bulletin at 5 p.m., the MeT Department said, "Dust storm/followed by Thunderstorm with light rainfall and lightning (50-80 Km/h gusty winds) is very likely to occur at entire Delhi , NCR ( Noida, Greater Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, Manesar, Ballabhgarh) during next 2 hours.”
Residents of Delhi, Noida, Gurugram and Faridabad took to social media to share visuals of the intense duststorms, which showed trees moving with strong winds. Meanwhile, Delhi's Pragati Maidan reported 76 kmph wind speed at 4:45 pm today.
This comes amid the ongoing flooding crisis in northeast. In Assam, more than 78,000 people across 15 districts have been affected by severe flooding and landslides, which have claimed eight lives so far. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on Sunday, spoke to the chief ministers of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, assuring them of every possible assistance to combat the crisis.
In Arunachal Pradesh's Seppa West Assembly constituency, seven people were killed in a massive landslide on Saturday, i.e., May 31. Meanwhile, northeastern state Manipur has also seen widespread damage, with floods and landslides affecting 3,802 people, according to official estimates.
