Delhi high court issues notice to Varun Gandhi for defamatory remarks

Controversies never stop trailing BJP MP Varun Gandhi. Delhi high court issued him a notice on Wednesday for defamatory remarks against VM Singh, Gandhi’s uncle and rival from Pilibhit constituency during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The notice asked Gandhi why defamatory proceedings should not be initiated against him. The court of justice Aruna Suresh was hearing a suit filed by Singh demanding Re1 as defamation charges for the hate speeches Gandhi gave in his constituency. Singh’s advocate Arjun Harkauli also submitted CDs containing Gandhi’s speeches and demanded that they be sealed at the earliest to avoid tampering. The court then fixed the next hearing for July 30.In his petition, Singh alleged Gandhi made remarks linking him to Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence and working for the separate state of Khalistan. He also accused Gandhi of insulting farmers and Muslims during his campaign. Demanding action against Gandhi, Singh said, “Gandhi’s election speech is defamatory and a blatant attempt to destroy the secular fabric of the country.”
