As the flood water of the Yamuna recedes and life gets back to normal at the Tibet Monastery market, the Delhi Government has started evaluating the option of building a flood wall along the market so that the river water does not enter the area again.
The Tibetan resettlement colony is located along the bank of the Yamuna on the Ring Road. Every time the water of Yamuna rises, the water enters the colony.
To find a permanent solution to this annual affair, the state government is looking at the possible options. “The project is at the discussion stage. If it gets approved, we will build a permanent wall,” said Dharampal, secretary, Revenue and Disaster Management Department of the Delhi Government.
However, building a wall along the Yamuna will require environmental clearance and the government. But the government is prepared to face the objections from the National Green Tribunal, NGOs and even the court of law. “The encroachers have been allowed to flourish along the flood plains. So, why not raise a wall for the safety of the people residing along the river,” said another officer.
