Delhi crime scene 'faceless', most are first-timers

The crime scene in Delhi seems to be "faceless", with more than 90 per cent of the people arrested in connection with criminal cases found to be "novices" or first-timers.     "There is no organised crime in Delhi. Faceless characters are committing crimes," Delhi police commissioner YS Dadwal told an annual press conference here.In a majority of cases of robbery, snatching and kidnapping reported in the capital in 2009, arrested persons were found to be "novice" or first-timers, he added.Dadwal said 90.56 per cent of those arrested in connection with dacoity and robbery cases here were found to be "first-timers". "They did not have any previous criminal record," he said.     All the accused arrested in connection with cases of kidnapping for ransom were also first-timers.     In cases of snatching too, 88.97 per cent of the arrested persons were found to be first-timers, he added.Dadwal attributed this to the fact that Delhi has a heterogeneous population and people are coming in from different parts of the country.He also attributed this to socio-economic factors like rich-poor gap. "People want to take short cuts in life to live a luxurious life," Dadwal said.
