Delhi civic official got to management school

With an aim to inculcate better management skills, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has started providing its officials training in reputed management schools of the country. The first batch of NDMC officials has received management training at the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), University of Delhi.

Additional Commissioner of NDMC Mayank Sharma told the dna first batch of the officials recently attended management development programme at the FMS, while training programmes for the officials will be held at the Indian Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) later in the year.

The first batch of 40 NDMCs official were trained in two programmes --- Contract and Finance Management programme and Structure Professional Development programme. “The officers of the engineering, and finance and accounts departments attended the contract and finance management programme at the FMS this year,” Sharma added.

According to the trained officials, the management training programme gave them an opportunity to enhance their skills and work at par with young trained professionals, particularly those in the private sector. “It’s a learning experience. The programme helped us understand the basics of management and improve the working style. The programme also focussed on stress management which will help the staff members work more efficiently under pressure,” said an official who attended the training programme.

Training programme for the civic officials has been proposed in the budget of current fiscal year. The corporation has earmarked a sum of Rs5 lakh to train its officials in the current fiscal. “Two days of training programme for 40 officials at the FMS had cost Rs1.8 lakh to the Corporation which also includes study materials,” the official said.

Along with the training programme, the civic body has also started in-house training programme for its officials in the other departments. “Two groups of officials of the accounts department were also imparted in-house training for better financial managements,” the official added.

While finalising the budget proposal in February, leader of house in NDMC, Mahender Nagpal had said, “There is a need to regularly upgrade the knowledge and skills of the officers of the corporation. It has been decided to establish a Sarv Prasikshan department which will be responsible for imparting regular training and development programmes for the officers and staff of the Corporation”
